Manchester United will be hoping to put pressure on title rivals Liverpool and Chelsea with a victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford. United might not be gunning for the quintuple anymore, thanks to their defeat to Everton in the FA Cup semi-final, but they are still in a strong position in both the Champion’s League and Premier League. The European champions know they will need to keep winning if they are going to be successful this season, including beating Spurs in this clash.
Striker Wayne Rooney is doubtful for the clash, but Sir Alex Ferguson has received a injury boost with England defender Wes Brown returning to the squad, after he recovered from a foot injury which has kept him out of action since November.
Tottenham’s season has taken a turn for the better in the last few months, rising from relegation battlers to European candidates. In their last Premier game Spurs defeated Newcastle 1-0 at White Hart Lane, Darren Bent scoring the only goal of the game. The victory took Tottenham just one point behind seventh place and a European place next season. Tottenham know they need to take something from this game to stay in touch with the teams above them in the race for Europe.
Striker Jermaine Defoe could return to the Tottenham starting line-up after making his comeback from injury in the victory over Newcastle. The strikers return could mean that Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko will have to be content with a place on the substitute’s bench.
